New Hope Academy is an independent K-12 private school and pre-school in Prince George's County. It opened in 1990 and is certified by the state of Maryland. It is international in composition, with over 35 countries and 20 faiths represented among faculty, staff, and students. It is a non-sectarian, non-denominational school which emphasizes a strong academic program, with character development based on values universal to people of all religions. The high school was established in 1998. The wide range of ages allows us to have a weekly mentoring program for middle school students who work with the pre-school and younger elementary grades. This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students.

In addition to core subjects, the following specialty subjects are offered: Art, Music, Korean, Spanish, Information Technology, Robotics, Physical Education, Health, Culinary Arts, and Swing Dance (see the curriculum pages for more details). High school electives also include: Arcade Game Design, Newspaper, Yearbook, Chorus, Drama, Spanish Dance, Swing Dance, Hip Hop, Golf, Fitness, and Drill Team. After school activities include: drama, ballet, tap dance, Spanish dance, jazz, drill team, basketball team, soccer, wrestling, cheerleading, and private music lessons.

Technology/Computer Lab: We have 24 Pentium IX computers, so each student has his or her own computer in Technology class. Parents can communicate with teachers through voice mail and email, and homework is posted weekly on the website HomeworkNow.com.

Early care is available from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
After care is available from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The record of New Hope Academy's high numbers continues: If a school's average student percentile score is in the mid 70s, it puts the school in the top 10% of schools nationwide. This feat was accomplished in spite of New Hope Academy's location in an area underserved by private schools, and in spite of losing some 8th graders every year to Eleanor Roosevelt High School's highly selective Science and Tech program. For the last several years, our average student on every grade level scored higher than average students at higher grade levels in the average American school. The numbers are even more striking and impressive when you consider that according to the MSPAP testing in Maryland, fully 80% of students in Prince George's County are performing BELOW grade level. --note from webmaster

There were changes made to the test in 2003 which made it more difficult, so scores before and after are not fully comparable. School-wide averages of grades K-8 from 2003 to the present were reported as percentiles and stanines. Stanines range from 1-9; the national Average is 5.0. New Hope Academy High School is a college preparatory program with the following requirements for a diploma.

21 minimum credits must include:

4 credits in English
6 credits in mathematics and science to include at least 2 credits in mathematics and 2 credits in science.
3 credits in social studies including

U.S. History 1 credit
Civics 1 credit
World History 1 credit

2 credits in foreign language of the same language (3 credits if graduating as a junior)
1/2 credit in information technology
1/2 credit in fine arts
1/2 credit in physical education
1/2 credit in health
4 credits of electives

Juniors may qualify for an Early Graduation Program if they maintain a 3.0 CGPA and Seniors who maintain a 2.5 CGPA may take courses at a community college.

Forty hours of community service are also required. Middle school students are able to earn service hours by mentoring younger students at New Hope Academy one hour per week. Students may also earn service hours by participating in "Service for Peace" projects after school.

Students in grades 9 through 11 take the PSAT every year.
